Purpose:
A study was established to estimate the prevalence of insomnia in patients who suffered chronic back pain causing disability.
Methods:
The candidates (mean, 55) all presented with chronic back pain for greater than 6 months. The insomnia was evaluated with the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) and the back pain disability with the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI).
Results:
Candidates for the study were made up of men and women who suffered from insomnia at different levels or who did not suffer at all. All suffered from chronic back pain. Of the 120 patients the disability ranged from moderate to crippling.
Conclusion:
A conclusion was reached that back pain should be treated early to avoid associated insomnia health issues.
